NAEP Technical DocumentationStratification for Private Schools in the 2003 National Main Assessment

Stratification for the 2003 Private School Samples

Private schools were explicitly stratified into five groups:

  • Catholic schools,

  • Lutheran schools,

  • Conservative Christian schools (schools belonging to Accelerated Christian Education Association, American Association of Christian Schools, Association of Christian Schools International, or Oral Roberts University Educational Fellowship comprise the group that corresponds to the designation of Conservative Christian in NCES reporting from the Private School Survey),

  • other private schools (all other private schools with known affiliation information), and

  • private school type unknown (affiliation information unknown or not sufficiently complete).

Within each explicit stratum, the private schools were implicitly stratified using the following hierarchical stratification:

  • Census division,
  • urbanization (based on the NCES type of location variable), and
  • minority status (percent Black/Hispanic/American Indian student enrollment in the school).
