Local Education Agency (School District) Locale Code Files

The LOCALE code on the CCD Locale Education Agency (LEA) file indicates the LEA's location relative to populous areas. Locale codes were first included on the CCD LEA files in the 2000–01 school year (SY) collection. Between school years 2003–04 and 2005–06, the district locale codes transitioned from single-digit "metro-centric" codes to two-digit, "urban-centric" codes. The files below document that transition, providing both the old metro-centric codes and the new urban-centric codes for the CCD LEA universe.

These files are for those researchers who are interested in how LEAs' locale definition may have changed during this transition.

NOTE: Locale codes are published for every CCD release from SY 2000–01 onward. From SY 2000–01 through 2014–15 they are included with the published CCD files on this web page - https://nces.ed.gov/ccd/pubagency.asp. Starting with SY 2015–16 they are published separately on this web page - https://nces.ed.gov/programs/edge/Geographic/SchoolLocations.
