Spotlight on Data


The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is currently reevaluating weights developed for the teacher data in the National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS) of 2015-16. Analyses suggest that the weights may be improperly inflated. Research needed to complete the reevaluation, produce updated weights, and rerelease the data will not be completed until the end of 2019. Please periodically return to the NTPS website for further updates. Please note that data on schools and principals from the 2015-16 NTPS are not affected by this process.

During the 2015–16 school year

  • On average, regular full-time teachers in public schools spent 53 hours per week on all school-related activities, including 27 hours that they were paid to deliver instruction to students during a typical full week.
  • In 201516, the average base salary of regular full-time teachers in public schools was $55,100.
  • 95 percent of public school principals reported having a major influence on decisions concerning evaluating teachers, 87 percent reported having a major influence on hiring new full-time teachers, and 75 percent reported having a major influence on setting discipline policy.
  • The average annual salary of public school principals was $95,700.
