NAEP Technical DocumentationMake-Up Sessions

When the total assessment attendance for general sessions at a school is below 90 percent, field staff notify the school coordinator that a make-up session must be scheduled. Make-up sessions are intended to provide students who were absent, but who have not refused to participate in the assessment, an opportunity to participate.

If a school is reluctant to schedule a make-up session, field staff stress the importance of high participation rates for accurate and robust assessment results. Ultimately, make-up sessions are conducted at the school's discretion. Make-up sessions are conducted as soon as possible after regular sessions on a schedule most convenient for the school. In some instances, make-up sessions may be conducted later on assessment day.
