NAEP Technical DocumentationStudent Sample Selection for the 2008 Public School Arts Assessment

For the arts assessment, the student sample consisted of all eighth-grade students in the school if the school had 40 or fewer students, or a sample of 35 students selected without replacement, if the school had 41 or more students.

The assessments were partitioned into two sessions types: music and visual arts. In a random half of the sample schools with fewer than 24 eighth-grade students, all the eighth-grade students were assigned to music. In the other half of these smaller schools, all the students were assigned to visual arts. In sample schools with 24 or more eighth-grade students, half the students received the music assessment and the other half received the visual arts assessment. Therefore, the overall probability of being assigned to a music session was 50 percent and the probability of being assigned to a visual arts session was 50 percent.

The process of list submission, sampling students from year-round schools, sampling new enrollees, and determining student eligibility and exclusion status was the same as the process used for the NAEP 2007 eighth-grade student sample
