NAEP Technical DocumentationStudent Response Rates and Exclusion Rates

The following table presents the overall weighted response rates and exclusion rates for the fourth-, eighth-, and twelfth-grade samples for public schools, by geographic region, and private schools, by school type. The weighted response rates give the weighted percentage of assessed students as a percentage of all students to be assessed. The SD exclusion rates give the weighted percentage of students who have disabilities (SD) and are excluded because of that as a percentage of all sampled students, and the LEP exclusion rates give the weighted percentage of students who are limited-English-proficient (LEP) and are excluded because of that as a percentage of all sampled students. For example, a weighted percentage of 4.0 percent excluded as LEP means that an estimated 4.0 percent of all students in the particular subgroup in the U.S. population would be excluded as LEP if sampled (an unweighted percentage is of the sampled students: using a weighted percentage makes the percentage an estimate for the full population in the subgroup). Note that some students may be both SD and LEP, so that the two exclusion rates do not add to an overall exclusion rate. All weighted rates utilize the student base weights.

NOTE: Detail may not add to totals because of rounding. Note also that the total percentage of SD and LEP students will generally be strictly less than the sum of the two percentages, because there is an overlap set (students who are both SD and LEP).
