The webpages that link to this section provide information about school-level participation to the 2002 national main assessment. Weighted aggregations for each set of schools were calculated by dividing the frame enrollment by the school probability of selection. The weighted aggregations for the eligible schools for each jurisdiction offer an estimate of the total population of students in the grade within each jurisdiction.

In all of the tables referenced in the webpages below, counts and percentages are given by state-based NAEP region. NAEP region (the state-based version and the earlier version which crossed state boundaries) were used as strata in 2002 NAEP and in earlier NAEP surveys rather than Census region because the populations in the NAEP regions were at that time close to equal (a desirable property of strata). NAEP region Northeast consists of all states in the Northeast Census region, plus Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. NAEP region Central is the same as the Midwest Census region. NAEP region West is the same as the West Census region, plus Texas and Oklahoma. NAEP region Southeast consists of all states in the South Census region except Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Texas and Oklahoma.
