! Interpret data with caution; the estimates are unstable; coefficient of variation is 30 percent or more and the standard error is less than 50 percent of the estimate.
1 The National Center for Education Statistics uses a statistical adjustment for estimates of total homeschoolers and the homeschooling rate in 2012. For more information about this adjustment, please see Homeschooling in the United States: 2012 (NCES 2015-019, forthcoming). All other estimates in this table do not use a statistical adjustment.
2 Grade equivalent is based on parents' responses to the question, "What grade or year would this child be in if he/she was attending school?" This number does not add to the total estimate of homeschooled students because it excludes children whose parents reported that they were enrolled in school on the NHES:2012 screener questionnaire but indicated that the child was homeschooled on the subsequent Parent and Family Involvement in Education Questionnaire (see Homeschooling in the United States: 2012 NCES 2015-019, forthcoming for more details).
NOTE: Homeschooled students are school-age children (ages 5-17) in a grade equivalent to at least kindergarten and not higher than 12th grade who receive instruction at home instead of at a public or private school either all or most of the time. Excludes students who were enrolled in public or private school more than 25 hours per week and students who were homeschooled only because of temporary illness. Percentages may not sum to 100 due to rounding.
