NOTE: PFI response rates are expressed as percentages. The denominator of the response rate is sampled students in households that responded to the National Household Education Survey screener. Parents who indicated that the sampled child was homeschooled instead of attending a public or private school for some or all classes on the screener were given questions from the PFI-Homeschooled questionnaire. Otherwise, parents were given questions from the PFI-Enrolled questionnaire. Response rates are weighted by the inverse of the probability of selection for the PFI survey. NHES:2016 response rates include only the 35,000 screener cases that were part of an experiment to test data collection by web. In the experiment, a random sample were mailed an invitation to complete the NHES by web. Nonresponding households received one follow-up letter requesting completion of the web survey followed by two mailings with the paper questionnaire.
