† Not applicable. State does not have legislation authorizing magnet or charter schools.
# Rounds to zero.
1 A magnet school is a school designed to attract students of different racial/ethnic backgrounds for the purpose of reducing, preventing, or eliminating racial isolation and/or to provide an academic or social focus on a particular theme.
2 Charter schools are schools that provide free public elementary and/or secondary education to eligible students under a specific charter granted by the state legislature or other appropriate authority and designated by such authority to be a charter school. Charter schools located in the same geographic area as a district's schools but not administered by the district itself are not included.
NOTE: Data include all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, four outlying areas (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), the Bureau of Indian Education, and the Department of Defense dependents schools (overseas and domestic). See table A-1 for student membership counts for each district.
