‡ Reporting standards were not met. Data were missing for more than 20 percent of schools. Ratios for the District of Columbia Public Schools were suppressed because full-time-equivalent (FTE) teachers did not appear to be reliably distributed across schools. See appendix B, Data Quality, for more information.
1 Totals do not include districts in which data were not available.
NOTE: Data include all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, four outlying areas (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), the Bureau of Indian Education, and the Department of Defense dependents schools (overseas and domestic). Primary = low grade, PK to 3; high grade, up to 8. Middle = low grade, 4 to 7; high grade, 4 to 9. High = low grade, 7 to 12; high grade 12. Other = any other combination, including PK, K, or 1 to 12. Pupil/teacher ratios are calculated using FTE teachers.
