Teacher Compensation Survey Data

National data on teachers are limited to periodic sample surveys or to simple counts at the district or school level. In response to the need for individual teacher-level data, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) developed the Teacher Compensation Survey (TCS), an administrative records survey that collects total compensation, teacher status, and demographic data about individual teachers from multiple states. In 2007, NCES launched the pilot TCS data collection, with seven states volunteering to provide administrative records for school year (SY) 2005–06. In the second year of the data collection, the TCS expanded to 17 states reporting SY 2006–07 data.1  The information collected from these records included base salary, total salary, benefits, highest level of education, years of teaching experience, gender, and race/ethnicity for each teacher.  The TCS file can be merged with the Common Core of Data (CCD) Public Elementary/Secondary School Universe Survey file to obtain such school information as school type, operational status, locale code, number of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, student enrollment by grade, race/ethnicity, and gender, and pupil/teacher ratio.  NCES will continue to request data from more states and to make the data more comparable across states.  It is anticipated that up to thirty-five states will volunteer to participate in the TCS from 2010 to 2013.

Common Core of Data (CCD) CD-ROM

This CD-ROM is a comprehensive source of information about all public elementary and secondary schools in the United States. It presents data from the CCD at the state, local education agency, and school levels. The CD-ROM includes information about the numbers of students, teachers, other education staff, school characteristics, school and school district locale (example, rural, suburban, big city), and revenues and expenditures for education from the CCD, as well as community demographics drawn from the decennial Census. The CD-ROM is designed for easy use, and allows the user to create a number of tables.

NCES Longitudinal School District Fiscal-Nonfiscal (FNF) File, Fiscal Years 1990 to 2002

These files contain fiscal and nonfiscal district data for each year from 1989-90 to 2001-02, for the universe of regular public elementary and secondary school districts.

  • Longitudinal Fiscal-Nonfiscal (FNF) file (v. 1a)
SAS File (182.5 MB) ZIP (73.4 MB)
TXT File (113.1 MB) ZIP (32.1 MB)

  • Longitudinal Unified Fiscal-Nonfiscal (UFNF) file (v. 1a)
SAS File (138.5 MB) ZIP (54.8 MB)
TXT File (139.3 MB) ZIP (50.5 MB)

The database is available in two forms. The primary longitudinal Fiscal-Nonfiscal (FNF) file in the database contains a separate record for each regular school district that was open some years in the 1990s. The other longitudinal file, the Unified Fiscal-Nonfiscal file (UFNF), combines data from separate elementary districts with the secondary districts they feed, so that each record contains data for a Unified K–12 "pseudo-district." ("Elementary" districts typically covered the grades K–8, while "secondary" districts typically covered the grades 9–12.) The database is designed for research use in testing hypotheses about longitudinal trends in school districts over this period. To facilitate analysis, all missing data have been replaced by statistical imputations.
