Summary

The family environment in which a child lives affects many aspects of that child's life, including school performance. Between 1972 and 1998, the educational attainment of parents and the employment rate of mothers of 6- to 12-year-olds increased, while the employment rate of fathers decreased and median family income remained relatively stable.
