NCSER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $250,000
Project director: Martin Schultz
Awardee:
ObjectiveEd, Inc.
Year: 2025
Award period: 8 months (09/12/2025 - 05/11/2026)
Project type:
Phase I Development
Contract number: 91990025C0078

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to develop and test BuddyBooks-LD, an enhanced version of the existing BuddyBooks literacy platform designed specifically for students with learning disabilities in grades 2–8. While BuddyBooks has demonstrated significant gains in fluency and comprehension for struggling readers, BuddyBooks-LD will integrate new features to address decoding, vocabulary, and engagement challenges that are particularly persistent for students with learning disabilities. These enhancements include color-coded phonics supports, AI-driven vocabulary prompts, interactive mini-games, and co-reading options that foster collaboration and comprehension. By building on the proven foundation of BuddyBooks, this project seeks to deliver an accessible, evidence-based, and scalable tool that helps close the literacy gap for students who need it most.

Project Activities

During Phase I, the project team will design and build prototype components of BuddyBooks-LD, focusing first on color-coded phonics text, AI-driven vocabulary support, and a prototype mini-game to reinforce decoding skills. These features will be integrated into the existing BuddyBooks platform to ensure seamless usability for teachers and students. The research team will conduct iterative usability and feasibility testing with a small group of students with learning disabilities and their teachers. Data will be collected through pre- and post-tests of fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, teacher and student surveys, classroom observations, and system analytics. Educators will also provide qualitative feedback on the ease of use, integration into instruction, and perceived impact on student engagement and learning. Findings will inform refinements to the design and functionality of BuddyBooks-LD. Results from this Phase I project will provide evidence of feasibility and usability, laying the foundation for a Phase II randomized controlled trial to rigorously evaluate impact
