NCES collects transcript data from postsecondary institutions for various longitudinal studies, including the Beginning Postsecondary Students (BPS) and Baccalaureate and Beyond (B&B) longitudinal studies.

College Course Map

NCES created the College Course Map (CCM) to code postsecondary student transcripts collected in its longitudinal studies. The CCM contains about 2,100 course categories and has been used to code nearly 650,000 courses for 18,000 students in the most recent study. The first CCM was developed in 1988 for the coding of transcripts collected as part of the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (NLS-72). The CCM was most recently revised in 2009 and was updated to be consistent with the NCES Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP), and was used to code transcripts collected as part of the 2004/2009 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/09) and the 2008/2009 Baccalaureate and Beyond Study (B&B:08/09).
