| 5 Parental school involvement was constructed by counting seven variables that describe the participation of the parent/guardian or other adult in the household in the following activities since the beginning of 2009-2010 school year: attending a general school meeting; attending a meeting of the parent-teacher organization; going to a scheduled parent-teacher conference; attending a school/class event, such as a play, dance, sports event, or science fair; serving as a volunteer with student's class; participating in school fundraising; or meeting with a school counselor. Only parents/guardians who provided a response for all activities are included. |
| 6 Parental cognitive stimulation/learning activities was constructed by counting eight variables that describe activities that the parent/guardian or another family member has done with their 9th graders: visiting a zoo, planetarium, museum, etc; working or playing on a computer together; building or fixing something such as a car or appliance; attending a school science fair; helping with a science fair project; discussing a program or article about math, science, or technology; visiting a library; or going to a play, concert, or live show. Only parents/guardians who provided a response for all activities are included. |
