Accessing the Data
HS&B data are available in three forms:
- Restricted-use microdata which require a restricted-use NCES license agreement.
- Public-use microdata available through the Online Codebook in the NCES DataLab.
- Public-use data available through the Powerstats Tool in the NCES Datalab, which allows users to generate statistical analyses and create data visualizations through an easy-to-use interface, without needing to download the microdata files. More information on these formats are provided below.
How do I access restricted-use microdata?
Restricted-use data are available under a restricted-use license agreement. Find out more about how to obtain a restricted-use license, here: http://nces.ed.gov/statprog/instruct.asp
Where can I download the public-use microdata?
Data users can use the NCES DataLab to access the Online Codebook, which enables users to search for study variables, and view survey question text, and see variable distributions. The Online Codebook also enables users to download the full publicly available microdata files in generic formats (ASCII or CSV) as well as in statistical software formats, including: SPSS, SAS, S-Plus, Stata, and R.
Where can I find the codebook or variable list?
The NCES DataLab Online Codebook provides the list of study variables, and information on survey question text, variable distribution, and programming logic for derived variables. Excel format files of study variables are also available for download below:
Where can I get training on the HS&B datasets?
HS&B:80 dataset training can be found on the Distance Learning Dataset Training (DLDT) system: https://nces.ed.gov/training/datauser/#/. A similar training will soon be developed for HS&B:22.
