NOTE: Adults are ages 25 to 64 and not enrolled in high school. The total number of adults in the labor force is approximately 121,593,000, the total number of adults in the labor force who have a certification is approximately 9,705,000, and the total number of adults in the labor force who do not have a certification is approximately 111,888,000. The combined unemployment and underemployment rate is calculated as [(number of adults who are not working but looking for work) + (number of adults who are employed part time only but would prefer to work full time or are working in a temporary job but would prefer a permanent job)]/[(number of adults who are working) + (number of adults who are not working but looking for work)]. Certifications and licenses were defined in the survey as follows: "A professional certification or license shows you are qualified to perform a specific job and includes things like licensed realtor, certified medical assistant, certified teacher, or an IT certification." If a respondent indicated that a license or certification was required by a government agency, it was counted as a license; otherwise it was counted as a certification. Information was collected on respondents' three most important licenses and certifications.
