Description:	Using NELS:88 base year data, student language proficiency, home language and academic achievement of Asian and Hispanic eighth graders will be examined. The students' and their parents' literacy in their first language, as well as their English language ability will be studied, along with other family characteristics such as parental education and aspirations, SES, length of residence in the U.S. and education in other countries.
