NCES 2018428 Working Before, During, and After Beginning at a Public 2-Year Institution: Labor Market Experiences of Community College Students
This Statistics in Brief report describes the employment of students attending public 2-year institutions before they enrolled in postsecondary education for the first time, as well as while they were enrolled in their first year. The report also examines how employment is related to these students’ postsecondary experiences and employment outcomes after exiting postsecondary education. The analyses use data from the 2012/14 Beginning Postsecondary Student Longitudinal Study (BPS:12/14), a nationally representative study of first-time postsecondary students who were interviewed up to 3 years after they began postsecondary education.

This manual has been produced to familiarize data users with the overall Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002) design. It also seeks to familiarize users with the procedures followed for data collection and processing over the four rounds of the study, with particular emphasis on the third follow-up. Additionally, this document provides information that will support research and policy analyses. The National Center for Education Statistics hopes that analysts will find that the ELS:2002 data are organized and equipped in a manner that facilitates users’ straightforward production of statistical summaries and analyses of the ELS:2002 youth cohorts as they embark on the transition from high school to postsecondary education and to the labor market, and assume yet other roles that serve as markers of newly achieved adult status.

Results are shown by enrollment, demographic, and employment characteristics and are presented separately for students who attended exclusively full time and students who ever attended part time.
