NCES 2022122REV 2021-22 Common Core of Data (CCD) Preliminary Files

These files are the product of the CCD data collection for the 2021-22 school year. Data are reported at state, district, and school levels as of October 1, 2021.

This CCD release includes preliminary Directory (version 0b), CCD School (version 0a), and Student Membership (version 0a) data. The version 0b preliminary Directory data in this release reflect updates made after the February 28, 2022 submission deadline and replace the 0a version Directory data released on May 11, 2022. The CCD School and Student Membership data in this release largely represent the data submitted by the state education agencies as of the April 29, 2022 file submission due date and include detailed data (i.e., student counts by grade, race/ethnicity, and sex) at the SEA level and total membership minus adult education at the district and school levels. Washington was not able to submit Student Membership data as of the submission deadline.

While the preliminary files have been reviewed to verify that the counts are within expected ranges, the data in this release has not yet undergone the full data quality review process and may contain errors that have not yet been resolved. They are meant to provide data users with a timely data release. Due to the preliminary nature of the data, users should analyze the data with caution.

NCES 2022046 2019 National Indian Education Study (NIES) Qualitative Data Companion

The National Indian Education Study (NIES) is a special study funded by the Office of Indian Education (OIE). The study includes oversampling of American Indian / Alaska Native (AI/AN) students in public schools and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) Schools. The study design includes students taking the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) operational assessment followed by a short survey questionnaire specific to AI/AN students about the role of AI/AN culture in students' lives and school experiences. Additionally, for teachers of the sampled AI/AN students there are surveys that collect information about teachers' backgrounds and instructional practices as they relate to the education of AI/AN students. (Note there also is a school administrator survey, however those data are unrelated to this data product.)

For both the student and teacher surveys, all of the questions were multiple choice, but a space was provided at the end of the survey for respondents to write in comments. There are two such write-in questions for each of the student and teacher surveys. The responses for these write-in questions are the purpose of this data product.

NCES 2022036 NAEP 2019 NIES (Grades 4 and 8) Restricted-Use Data Files
This CD-ROM contains data and documentation files for the NAEP 2019 National Indian Education Study (NIES) for use in the analysis of NAEP data by secondary researchers. NIES, which was administered as part of NAEP, is a two-part study designed to describe the condition of education for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students in the United States. The data files include NAEP mathematics and reading assessment data from the samples of American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) students at grades 4 and 8 who participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2019 mathematics or reading assessments, as well as NIES survey response data of sampled AI/AN students in grades 4 and 8, their teachers, and their school principals. A Data Companion is provided in electronic portable document format (PDF). This document contains information on the contents and use of the data files as well as the assessment design and its implications for analysis. NAEP datasets from 2002 onward require a Tool Kit with the updated NAEPEX. Your organization must apply for and be granted a restricted-use data license in order to obtain these data.

WWC 2022005 Social Belonging Intervention Report
This What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) intervention report summarizes the research on Social Belonging interventions that support postsecondary success. Social Belonging interventions for college students aim to reduce the impacts of negative stereotypes that may burden students in underrepresented groups and affect their persistence in college. Examples of such groups are racial or ethnic minority groups, women in engineering, and first-generation college students. There are different variations of Social Belonging interventions, but they all have in common a goal of influencing students' sense that they could be successful within a college setting. Based on the research, the WWC found that Social Belonging interventions have mixed effects on academic achievement and progressing in college, and have no discernible effects on college enrollment.

NCES 2021077 2020 Long-Term Trend Reading and Mathematics Assessment Results at Age 9 and Age 13
This report presents the results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) long-term trend assessments in reading and mathematics administered during the 2019–20 school year to 9- and 13-year-old students. Long-term trend assessments were first administered in the early 1970s; results are available for 13 reading assessments dating back to 1971 and 12 mathematics assessments dating back to 1973. This report provides trend results in terms of average scale scores, selected percentiles, and five performance levels. Item maps for each age group illustrate skills demonstrated by students when responding to assessment questions. Scale score results are included for students by selected background characteristics (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, and grade attended). Overall, the 2020 average scores in reading and mathematics for 13-year-olds were higher than the earliest assessments but declined since 2012. Scores for the lowest-performing students (at the 10th percentile) decreased from 2012 at both ages and subjects.

NCES 2021122REV 2020-21 Common Core of Data (CCD) Preliminary Files

These files are the product of the CCD data collection for the 2020-21 school year. Data are reported at school and local education agency (LEA) levels as of October 1, 2020. The first preliminary files were released on April 2, 2021, and only contained school and LEA directory files (version 0a). Those data files were reviewed to verify that the data were within expected ranges, but did not undergo the full data quality follow-up process.

The revised SY 2020-21 CCD Preliminary Files include updated directory files (version 0b) as well as the preliminary membership files (version 0a).

  • School Level
    • Preliminary Directory (version 0b)
  • LEA Level
    • Preliminary Directory (version 0b)
    • Preliminary Membership (version 0a)
  • State Level
    • Preliminary Membership (version 0a)

The preliminary school- and LEA-level Directory data (version 0b) in this release reflects updates made on the version 0a during the data quality follow-up period. These 0b files replace the 0a files released in April 2021. The preliminary school and LEA directory files include basic identifying information for each public school and LEA, including the NCES identification numbers, location and mailing address and some limited attributes about the school or LEA, such as type, operational status, the lowest and highest grade offered, and whether a school is a charter school. However, the preliminary directory does not include information regarding the mode of instructional delivery (e.g., in person, virtual) being used at the school for the 2020-21 school year.

The preliminary LEA membership file includes the total student count for each entity, while the preliminary state membership includes student counts by grade, race/ethnicity, and sex. While the preliminary membership files have been reviewed to verify that the counts are within expected ranges, the data in this release has not yet undergone the full data quality follow-up process and may contain errors that have not yet been resolved. They are meant to provide data users with a timely release of basic membership data at the LEA and state levels. Illinois was not able to submit membership data as of the submission deadline. Due to the preliminary nature of the data, users should analyze the data with caution.
