NCES 2024181 U.S. Results From the 2023 International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) Web Report
The U.S. Results From the 2023 International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) Web Report describes results from the 2023 International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS). This study is the third cycle of a computer-based international assessment sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. ICILS is designed to measure eighth-grade students’ capacities to use information communications technologies (ICT) productively for a variety of different purposes, beyond a basic use of digital technology and consists of two assessments: one required, computer and information literacy (CIL), and one optional, computational thinking (CT). The United States participated in both components in 2018 and 2023. The U.S. Results From the 2023 ICILS Web Report provides selected results from the study, comparing U.S. students’ skills and experience using technology in 2018 and 2023 and U.S. students’ skills internationally. It also provides contextual data on factors that may influence students’ CIL and CT skills.

REL 2023143 Encouraging Families to Visit a Literacy Website: A Randomized Study of the Impact of Email and Text Message Communications
The Arkansas Department of Education partnered with the Regional Educational Laboratory Southwest to study the feasibility and effectiveness of using brief email and text message communications to increase the number of parent and guardian visits to the Reading Initiative for Student Excellence (R.I.S.E.) state literacy website.

In November 2021, the department sent test messages to families to determine the percentage of households with children in kindergarten–grade 6 in Arkansas public schools that had a working email address or cell phone number and whether the percentage differed by school locale (rural or nonrural) or demographic composition (percentage of economically disadvantaged students, Black students and Hispanic students, or English learner students). Subsequently, the study team randomly assigned 700 Arkansas public elementary schools to one of eight conditions, which varied the mode of communication (email only or email and text message), the presentation of information (no graphic or with a graphic), and the type of sender (generic sender or known sender). In January 2022 households with children in these schools were sent three rounds of communications with information about literacy and a link to the R.I.S.E. website. The study examined the impact of these communications on whether parents and guardians clicked the link to visit the website (click rate) and conducted an exploratory analysis of differences in how long they spent on the website (time on page).

NCES 2020088 Public-Use Data Files and Documentation (FRSS 109): 2018-19 Teachers' Use of Technology for School and Homework Assignments
This product contains data from a Fast Response Survey System (FRSS) survey titled "2018-19 Teachers' Use of Technology for School and Homework Assignments." This survey provides nationally representative data on public school teachers about their understanding of the types of devices and technologies that students use for educational purposes, the impact that student access to technology outside of school has on homework assignments, and ways that schools and teachers address challenges that students with limited access to technology face in completing homework assignments. Data were collected in the 2018-19 school year, the year before the coronavirus pandemic outbreak in 2020. It focuses on information that can best be provided by teachers from their perspective and direct interaction with students.

The survey provides nationally representative data of public school teachers who taught at least one regularly scheduled class in grades 3–12 and taught either self-contained classes or departmentalized classes in one or more of the core subjects of English/language arts, social studies/social science, math, or science. Data were provided by approximately 2,900 teachers from sampled from 1,600 schools. Computers were defined to include desktop and laptop computers, as well as tablets with a virtual or physical keyboard. Smartphones were not included in the definition of computers, but separate information was collected for smartphones.

Documentation provides information about the purpose of the study, the sample design, the data collection procedures, the data processing procedures, response rates, imputation, weighting and standard error calculation and use, the data files and codebooks, and the file layout of the ASCII data file. The ASCII data and a SAS version of the data file are also provided.
