The Academic Libraries: 2006 First Look summarizes services, staff, collections, and expenditures of academic libraries in 2- and 4-year, degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The nationís 3,600 academic libraries held 1.0 billion books; serial backfiles; and other paper materials, including government documents at the end of FY 2006, and there were 144.1 million circulation transactions from their general collections. During the same time period, academic librariesí expenditures totaled $6.2 billion.

The selected findings and tables in this report, based on the 2004 Academic Libraries Survey, summarize services, staff, collections, and expenditures of academic libraries in degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The report includes a number of key findings: During fiscal year (FY) 2004, there were 155.1 million circulation transactions from academic librariesí general collection. During a typical week in the fall of 2004, 1.4 million academic library reference transactions were conducted, including computer searches. The nationís 3,700 academic libraries held 982.6 million books; serial backfiles; and other paper materials, including government documents at the end of FY 2004. Academic libraries spent $2.2 billion on information resources during FY 2004.

NCES 2005302 School Library Media Centers: Selected Results From the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002)
This report provides an overview of the current state of school library media centers that serve U.S. 10th-graders. It contains summarized findings from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002) library media center survey. The ELS:2002 library media center survey, primarily administered to school librarians, examined various aspects of school librariesótheir space, organization, collections, resources, staffing, and use. In addition, 10th-graders provided information on their use of and opinions about their school libraries. This report presents findings for schools by the following school characteristics: school sector, school urbanicity, school region, grade span, school enrollment, and the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-priced lunch in grade 10. Findings for students are presented by the following characteristics: sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), composite achievement test score in grade 10, studentís school sector, studentís school urbanicity, and studentís school region.
