This user’s guide documents the procedures used to collect and summarize the data from the 2009 High School Transcript Study. The appendices contain the data collection and documentation forms; associated National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2009 questionnaires; information concerning nonresponse bias associated with creating the HSTS weights; a description of the Classification of Secondary School Courses (CSSC), which was used to code the courses on the collected transcripts, plus a complete listing of CSSC codes; codebooks for all of the 2009 data files; and a glossary.

NCES 2011462 America’s High School Graduates: Results of the 2009 NAEP High School Transcript Study
This report presents information about the types of courses 2009 high school graduates took during high school, how many credits they earned, and the grades they received. Information on the relationships between high school records and performance in mathematics and science on the twelfth-grade National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is also included. Transcripts were collected from a nationally representative sample of 37,700 high school graduates. The 2009 results are compared to the results of earlier transcript studies, and differences among graduates by race/ethnicity, gender, and other demographic characteristics are examined. In addition, the report takes a closer look at science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) coursetaking, ways in which graduates may earn more credits, and the coursetaking patterns of students with disabilities and English language learners. Additional technical notes provide information on the sample design, school and student participation rates, the inclusion/exclusion criteria for graduates, and other statistical information for interpreting the results.

Highlights of the study findings show that in 2009 graduates earned over three credits more than their 1990 counterparts, or about 420 additional hours of instruction during their high school careers. A greater percentage of 2009 graduates completed more challenging curriculum levels than 1990 or 2005 graduates. Graduates with stronger academic records earned higher NAEP scores. For example, graduates who completed who a rigorous curriculum, completed a higher level mathematics or science course in ninth grade, or who completed an Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) mathematics or science course, had NAEP scores at the Proficient level in both mathematics and science. A larger percentage of female than male graduates completed a midlevel or rigorous curriculum in 2009. In 2009, male graduates generally had higher NAEP mathematics and science scores than female graduates completing the same curriculum level. White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian/Pacific Islander graduates earned, on average, more credits and higher grade point averages (GPAs) in 2009 than they did in 1990. Since 1990, more graduates from each racial/ethnic group completed at least a standard curriculum.

NCES 1990527 A College Course Map and Transcript Files: Changes in Course-Taking and Achievement, 1972-1993. Second Edition.
This document, a byproduct of the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972, provides data on what postsecondary courses are actually taken both by school completers and school leavers, based on analysis of postsecondary transcripts from 1972 to 1984 of 12,600 students graduating from high school in 1972. Also presented is a revised Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) coding system based on recoding the 485,000 instances of course-taking in the sample. The tentative new taxonomy and decision rules were reviewed by faculties in the appropriate fields prior to final application. Data from the study are presented in tabular form and include the following: percentage of students completing undergraduate courses in 1,037 course categories; percentage of students completing undergraduate courses in 103 aggregate course categories; and distribution of all completed courses by type of institution. Additional data presented cover: basic demography and high school backgrounds of students; highest degree earned; college scholarship support; basic demography of 2/4-year and transfer attendance patterns; date of bachelor's degrees; date of associate's degrees; course of study and degrees earned beyond the bachelor's; and college experiences/attainments. NCES 1988675 Sophomore Cohort Postsecondary Education Transcript Study. High School and Beyond. Technical Report.
Procedures are described that were used to collect and process postsecondary school transcripts for a subsample of members of the younger (i.e. 1980 sophomore) cohort of the High School and Beyond study who attended postsecondary institutions at any time after leaving high school. Five chapters are as follows: (1) introduction (the National Center for Education Statistics Longitudinal Studies Program, relationships between High School and Beyond and the National Longitudinal Study of the High School class of 1972, history of High School and Beyond, related studies, other files, and scope of the Postsecondary Education Transcripts Study); (2) data collection (objectives, mailings, results); (3) data preparation (objectives, data organization, computer-assisted data entry (CADE), and data quality management); (4) data processing (machine editing, organization and content of the data file, merging records, and a cautionary note on the use of credits and grades data in the postsecondary transcripts database); and (5) sample design and implementation (base year sample design, 1980 sophomore cohorts sample design, the Senior and the Sophomore Cohort Postsecondary Education Transcript Study sample, sample weights, and standard errors and design effects). Exhibits include research design for National Education Longitudinal Studies and sample CADE screens. High School and Beyond (HS&B) is a longitudinal study, sponsored by the Center for Statistics (CS), of nationally representative samples of high school sophomores and seniors of 1980. In the 1980 base year survey questionnaires and cognitive tests were administered to over 30,000 sophomores and 28,000 seniors enrolled in 1,015 public and private schools. Follow-up surveys were conducted in 1982 and 1984. This annotated bibliography contains 276 references to journal articles, papers, and books (published as of June 30, 1985) that use HS&B data. Each reference includes complete publication data, up to eight topic entries (key words), and an annotation. The bibliography includes CS publications, and references downloaded from Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), Dissertation Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, National Technical Information Service (NTIS) and U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) data bases. The HS&B bibliography was developed using a microcomputer-based bibliographic information program called REF-11. The two REF-11 data fields are described in Part I, Guide for Users. Part II contains entries arranged alphabetically by first author. Part III contains the most recent additions. Part IV lists topics used in the REF-11 topic field. Part V contains a compilation of the references in bibliographic format plus an author index. This HS&B bibliography is updated on a continuing basis. (BS)

This data file user's manual documents the procedures used to collect and process high school transcripts for a large sample of the younger cohort (1980 sophomores) in the High School and Beyond survey.
