WWC IRTC0419 Facilitating Long-Term Improvements in Graduation and Higher Education for Tomorrow (FLIGHT)/Take Stock in Children (TSIC)
The intervention report summarizes the WWC’s examination of the impact of Take Stock in Children's (TSIC's) FLIGHT program on high schools students' college access and enrollment, general achievement, and attendance.

The FLIGHT intervention is designed to provide students with wrap-around case-management services including college preparation assistance, academic monitoring, and behavioral monitoring. Eligible students are connected with volunteer mentors, student advocates, and provided a two-year scholarship to college. FLIGHT also provides students and parents with workshops that cover a range of topics such as goal setting, study skills, and college preparation and applications. FLIGHT students also have access to college transition and retention services in their first three semesters of college.

Based on the most recent available evidence, the WWC found that FLIGHT had potentially positive effects on college access and enrollment for recent high school graduates. There were no discernible effects on general achievement or attendance for high school students.

NCES 2018418 Trends in Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Submissions
These Web Tables combine FAFSA submission data released by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid, starting with the 2006–07 application cycle, with other nationally representative data to show variation in FAFSA submissions by region, state or jurisdiction, selected applicant characteristics, and over time. The publication presents two measures of the number of FAFSA submissions per person. One measure divides the number of FAFSA submissions by the number of individuals who are 18 through 24 years old, which approximates the population of potential traditional-age undergraduates. The other measure divides the number of FAFSA submissions by the enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students.

NCES 2018432 Characteristics and Outcomes of Undergraduates With Disabilities
These Web Tables provide information about postsecondary students with disabilities in academic years 2003–04 through 2015–16 using multiple federal data sources. These tables highlight data on demographic and background characteristics, enrollment and academic characteristics, and postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities. The tables are based on data from several sources: the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), the American Community Survey (ACS), the 2011–12 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:12), the 2004/09 and 2012/14 cohorts of the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/09 and BPS:12/14), and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).

NCES 2016332 NCES-Barron's Admissions Competitiveness Index Data Files: 1972, 1982, 1992, 2004, , 2008, 2014
The NCES−Barron’s Admissions Competitiveness Index Data Files: 1972, 1982, 1992, 2004, 2008, 2014 (NCES 2015-332) contain the Barron’s college admissions competitiveness selectivity ratings for 1972, 1982, 1992, 2004, 2008, 2014 along with the NCES Higher Education Information System (HEGIS) FICE ID and Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) UNITID codes and the Office of Postsecondary Education OPEID codes of each postsecondary institution included. Also included are the city and state of each institution included in the Barron’s lists. The years selected correspond to the years that students in the longitudinal studies (NLS-72, HS&B, NELS:88, ELS-2000,HSLS:09, and BPS) initially attended the 4-year postsecondary institutions. Each of the six NCES−Barron’s index files is available in a separate worksheet in an Excel workbook file that is in Excel 1997–2003 compatible format.

NCEE 20174005 Upward Bound at 50: Reporting on Implementation Practices Today
Launched in 1965, Upward Bound (UB) is one of the flagship federal college access programs targeted to low-income or potential first-generation college students. This evaluation report is based on a on a 2013 survey of regular UB project directors and examines the approaches that UB projects use to provide core program services. While legislation prescribes the seven core services to be offered to students, findings suggest similarities in how Upward Bound projects focus and deliver only some core services and variation across projects operated ("hosted") by different kinds of institutions and in different locales.

WWC QR0108 Information and College Access: Evidence From a Randomized Field Experiment
This study examined the impact of offering an online informational video and financial aid materials to high school students on: (1) their postsecondary aspirations, (2) the accuracy of their understanding of financial aid availability, and (3) the accuracy of their estimates of the economic benefits of postsecondary education.

The study found that students offered the video and financial aid calculator reported more accurate assessments of returns to postsecondary education, less concern about postsecondary costs, and higher expectations for their educational attainment. The effects may have been larger for students who originally reported that they were unsure about their expected educational attainment. However, because of the need for additional data from the study authors, the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) cannot confirm the statistical significance of any of the study's outcomes.

NCES 2012046 Higher Education: Gaps in Access and Persistence Study
The Higher Education: Gaps in Access and Persistence Study is a congressionally-mandated statistical report that documents the scope and nature of gaps in access and persistence in higher education by sex and race/ethnicity. The report presents 46 indicators grouped under seven main topic areas: (1) demographic context; (2) characteristics of schools; (3) student behaviors and afterschool activities; (4) academic preparation and achievement; (5) college knowledge; (6) postsecondary education; and (7) postsecondary outcomes and employment. In addition, the report contains descriptive multivariate analyses of variables that are associated with male and female postsecondary attendance and attainment.

NCES 2012213 New Americans in Postsecondary Education: A Profile of Immigrant and Second-Generation American Undergraduates
This Statistics in Brief describes the characteristics and undergraduate experiences of 2007–08 undergraduates who immigrated to the United States or who had at least one immigrant parent (second-generation Americans). The analysis compares these two groups with all undergraduates (excluding foreign students) and with third- or higher generation American undergraduates whose parents were born in the United States. The findings are based on data from the 2007–08 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:08), a nationally representative sample of more than 100,000 students enrolled in U.S. postsecondary institutions.

This datafile contains the public-use data from the base year data collection of the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09).

HSLS:09 is the fifth in a series of secondary school longitudinal studies sponsored by NCES. The design of HSLS:09 is similar to past studies, such as NELS:88 and ELS:2002, with data provided by students and their parents, math and science teachers, and school staff - both administrators and counselors. However, HSLS:09 emphasizes math and science as well as preparation for postsecondary education and features the following innovations: 1) HSLS:09 is the first NCES-sponsored longitudinal study to begin with a 9th grade cohort; 2) School counselor input into students’ decision-making about courses and postsecondary choices was collected; and 3) The mathematics assessment was developed specifically for this study and focuses on algebra skills critical to success in secondary and postsecondary education.

This datafile contains the restricted-use data from the base year data collection of the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09).

Data file documentation (NCES 2010-330) describes the Barron’s Admissions Selector for 1972, 1982, 1992, 2004, and 2008 (in NCES 2010-331) and the procedure followed in assigning HEGIS FICE and IPEDS UNITID codes to the institutions listed in Barron’s. This documentation also provides example SAS programs for merging the NCES−Barron’s Competitive Index Data files with NLS-72, HS&B, NELS:88, ELS-2002 and BPS longitudinal studies as well as a number of issues to assist the researcher. This data documentation accompanies the NCES−Barron’s Admissions Competitiveness Index Data Files (NCES 2010-331).
