In 2013-14, the University of Texas and NORC collected data from the HS&B sophomore cohort (when most cohort members were in their early 50’s) with support from NCES. This data file provides both cross-sectional as well as the longitudinal data collected over 30 years after the initial base year survey of the cohort of students.

The table displays an overall national rate, a state rate, national and state rates for racial/ethnic groups and other demographics. State data are included for the second time for "Homeless enrolled" and "Foster care." The table represents EDFacts File Specification 150 (Data Group 695), School year 2018–19; As of July 24, 2020.

The data file provides data obtained during the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) Postsecondary Education Transcript Study and Student Financial Aid Records Collection (PETS-SR). HSLS:09 follows a nationally representative sample of students who were ninth-graders in fall 2009 from high school into postsecondary education and the workforce. The PETS-SR data collection was conducted between spring 2017 and fall 2018, approximately 4 years after high school graduation for most of the cohort. These data allow researchers to examine postsecondary coursetaking experiences and financial aid awards for the subset of fall 2009 ninth-graders who enrolled in postsecondary education after high school.

NCES 2020082 Male and Female High School Students’ Expectations for Working In a Health-Related Field
This Data Point is based on data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), a nationally representative, longitudinal study of more than 23,000 ninth-graders in 2009. Follow-up surveys were administered to the cohort in 2012 and 2013. It examines students’ expectations for a job in healthcare at age 30 when they were freshmen, and again in the spring of 2012. It provides a description of the percentage of students who expected to have a job in healthcare at age 30 in both 2009 and 2012, those who changed their expectations, and those who did not expect a job in healthcare at either time. It also describes differences between males and females in expectations for a job in healthcare.

The cohort was surveyed again in spring 2012 when most students were in eleventh grade. The report draws on data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002).

NCES 2018141 HSLS:09 Base Year to Second Follow-up Restricted-use Data File
This release includes the most recent data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), collected as part of the Second Follow-up. HSLS:09 follows a nationally representative sample of students who were ninth-graders in fall 2009 from the beginning of high school into higher education and the workforce. The second follow-up was conducted from March 2016 through January 2017, approximately 3 years after high school graduation for most of the cohort. The data collected allow researchers to examine an array of young-adulthood outcomes among fall 2009 ninth-graders, including delayed high school completion, postsecondary enrollment, early postsecondary persistence and attainment, labor market experiences, family formation, and family financial support.
