This web report provides key comparative information about teachers and principals in the United States and 48 other education systems that participated in the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2018. TALIS is sponsored by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and focuses on teachers and principals at the lower secondary school level (grades 7, 8, and 9 in the United States). TALIS 2018 data are based on teachers’ and principals’ responses to survey questions, and the highlights in the web report cover their backgrounds, work environments, professional development, and beliefs and attitudes about teaching.

NCES 2019303 Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary School Districts: School Year 2015–16 (Fiscal Year 2016)

This First Look report presents data on public elementary and secondary education revenues and expenditures at the local education agency (LEA) or school district level for fiscal year (FY) 2016. Specifically, this report includes findings for the following types of school district finance data:

  • Current expenditure totals and current expenditure per pupil amounts by state and for the 100 largest LEAs;
  • Federal, state, and local revenues for the 100 largest LEAs;
  • Median revenues per pupil and median current expenditures per pupil by geographic region and locale;
  • Current expenditure totals and current expenditure per pupil amounts by function and object, by state and for the two largest LEAs in each state;
  • Federal revenues by program and local revenues by source, by state;
  • Revenues per pupil by poverty quartile and state; and
  • Capital outlay expenditures by state.

NCES 2019401 Persistence, Retention, and Attainment of 2011–12 First-Time Beginning Postsecondary Students as of Spring 2017
This First Look report provides descriptive findings from the 2012/17 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:12/17) focusing on students’ persistence, retention, and attainment in postsecondary education 6 years after their initial enrollment. BPS:12/17 is a nationally representative longitudinal sample survey of students who began postsecondary education for the first time during the 2011–12 academic year. This report draws on the second follow-up data which cover the experiences of these first-time beginning postsecondary students over 6 academic years, from 2011–12 to 2016–17.

NCES 2019130 Findings From the Fifth-Grade Round of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011)
This brief report provides a first look at the overall fifth-grade achievement of the students who attended kindergarten for the first time in the 2010-11 school year and were in fifth grade in the spring of 2016 using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011). Reading, mathematics, and science assessment scores in the spring of fifth grade are shown, both overall and by selected child and family characteristics.

This report presents findings from the Early Childhood Program Participation Survey of the National Household Education Surveys Program of 2016 (NHES:2016). The Early Childhood Program Participation Survey collected data on children’s participation in relative care, nonrelative care, and center-based care arrangements. It also collected information from parents about the main reason for choosing care, what factors were important to parents when choosing a care arrangement, and parents’ participation in various learning activities with their children.

This report is based on the 2016–17 survey Career and Technical Education Programs in Public School Districts and provides nationally representative data on career and technical education (CTE) programs. The survey defines a CTE program as a sequence of courses at the high school level that provides students with the academic and technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in current or emerging professions.

NCES 2018139 High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) Second Follow-Up: A First Look at Fall 2009 Ninth-Graders in 2016
This publication provides descriptive findings from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) Second Follow-up. HSLS:09 follows a nationally representative sample of students who were ninth-graders in fall 2009 from the beginning of high school into higher education and the workforce. The second follow-up was conducted from March 2016 through January 2017, approximately 3 years after high school graduation for most of the cohort. The data collected allow researchers to examine an array of young-adulthood outcomes among fall 2009 ninth-graders, including delayed high school completion, postsecondary enrollment, early postsecondary persistence and attainment, labor market experiences, family formation, and family financial support.

NCES 2018466 2015–16 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:16): Student Financial Aid Estimates for 2015–16
This First Look publication provides the first results of the 2015–16 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:16), the most comprehensive nationally representative survey of student financing of postsecondary education in the United States. The survey was conducted with about 89,000 undergraduate students and 24,000 graduate students attending 1,800 postsecondary institutions in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. This report describes the percentages of students receiving various types of financial aid and average amounts received, by type of institution attended, attendance pattern, dependency status, and income level.
