Degrees and Other Awards Conferred by Institutions of Higher Education: 1993-94

According to the report, U.S. institutions of higher education conferred
just over 2.2 million degrees in academic year 1993-94, a 2 percent increase
over 1992-93. Twenty-four percent were associate's degrees; 53 percent were
bachelor's degrees; 17 percent were master's degrees; 2 percent were doctor's
degrees; and 3 percent were first-professional degrees.
Some highlights from the report include:
- Public institutions awarded almost 69 percent of all degrees, although
the percentage varied considerably by degree level. Public institutions awarded
84 percent of all associate's degrees, over 67 percent of bachelor's degrees, 57
percent of master's degrees, 66 percent of doctor's degrees, but only 40 percent
of first-professional degrees.
- Women received the majority of all degrees (55 percent) as well as the
majority of associate's (59 percent), bachelor's (54 percent), and master's (55
percent) degrees. However, women received only 39 percent of all doctor's
degrees awarded in 1993-94, and 41 percent of the first-professional degrees.
- White, non-Hispanics, received nearly 77 percent of all degrees
awarded in academic year 1993-94, while minorities received 16 percent. Nearly 5
percent of all degrees were received by non-resident aliens, with the balance
(nearly 3 percent) going to individuals whose race/ethnicity was not known.
- Among minorities, black, non-Hispanics, received 7 percent of all
degrees. Hispanics and Asians/Pacific Islanders received 4 percent each, and
American Indians/Alaskan Natives received just over one-half of 1 percent.
