NOTE: The universe for this table includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, four outlying areas (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Marianas, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Department of Defense schools. How to read this table: Using the City of Chicago School District as an example, the table shows that 25 percent of the schools have a pupil membership of 389 or less, and 25 percent have a membership of 881 or more. If all the regular schools in the City of Chicago School District were listed by size, the school at the mid point on the list (the median) would have 600 pupils in membership. Dividing all City of Chicago School District students in regular schools by the number of such schools yields a mean, or average, size of 709.8 students.
