How to read this table: Using Dade County as an example, the table shows that 25 percent of the schools have a pupil membership of 584 or less, and 25 percent have a membership of 1,289 or more. If all the regular schools in Dade County were listed by size, the school at the mid-point on the list (the median) would have 877 pupils in membership. Dividing all students in regular schools by the number of such schools yields a mean, or average, size of 1,074.6 students. The standard deviation is a measure of how schools in the district are distributed between the minimum and maximum compared to the mean. Smaller standard deviations indicate that schools in the district are closer to the mean value while larger standard deviations indicate that school size is spread more widely across the range of possible values.
