These Web Tables provide an overview of classes taken and credits earned by a nationwide sample of first-time beginning postsecondary students based on data from the Postsecondary Education Transcript Study (PETS) of the 2004/09 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study. PETS collected transcripts from all the postsecondary institutions students attended, providing a complete 6-year record of students’ coursetaking and credit accumulation. Topics covered in these Web Tables include precollege credits, remedial education participation, withdrawals and repeated courses, and credits earned in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Tables also present credits earned in each year of enrollment and total credits earned by whether students earned a credential.

To provide a nationally representative portrait of undergraduate students’ experiences in STEM education, these Web Tables summarize longitudinal data from a cohort of first-time, beginning students who started postsecondary education in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program in 2003−04, examining their entrance into and attrition from STEM fields and the extent to which they participated in STEM coursework over a period of 6 academic years, from 2003–04 to 2008–09.

The Postsecondary Education Transcript Study restricted-use data file contains transcript data from study members in the 2004/09 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/09). BPS:04/09 includes a nationally representative sample of students who began postsecondary education for the first time in the 2003-04 academic year. Transcripts were collected on sample members from every institution attended between the 2003-04 academic year and the 2008-09 academic year. Data from student interviews and administrative sources are available in a separate restricted use file.

These Web Tables provide estimates on completion times for undergraduate students who entered postsecondary education for the first time in 2003–04 and whose first degree attained by spring 2009 was an associate’s degree using data from the 2004/09 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study. Results are shown by enrollment, demographic, and employment characteristics and are presented separately for students who attended exclusively full time and students who ever attended part time.

This document presents a national tapestry of what is studied where, and by whom, in U.S. colleges, community colleges, and postsecondary trade schools. The "Map" is based on empirical information from national samples of postsecondary transcripts in two national longitudinal studies, the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (NLS-72) and the High School and Beyond/Sophomore Cohort (HSB/SO). The cohorts of the HSB/SO were scheduled to graduate from high school in 1982. Participation in postsecondary education expanded considerably during the period from 1972 to 1993, but the rate of completing any credentials by age 30 did not increase. The rate of bachelor's degree completion declined in the same period, as did the rate at which bachelor's degree recipients entered graduate or professional school. Time-to-degree increased by 7%, and the average number of credits earned by students also increased. The document has seven major sections: (1) "Making the Map," a description of the methodology; (2) "Degrees, Majors, Credits, and Time," a study of the long-term educational attainment of both cohorts; (3) "The Changing Shape of Delivered Knowledge," the taxonomy of courses derived from the samples; (4) "Who Provides?," the distribution of attempted courses by institution type; (5) "The Empirical Core Curriculum," a study of student course taking; (6) "Changes in the Proportion of Students Earning Undergraduate Credits in Specific Courses," an analysis of changes in student credits; and (7) "Undergraduate Grades: A Complex Story," the analysis of student achievement. This document, a byproduct of the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972, provides data on what postsecondary courses are actually taken both by school completers and school leavers, based on analysis of postsecondary transcripts from 1972 to 1984 of 12,600 students graduating from high school in 1972. Also presented is a revised Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) coding system based on recoding the 485,000 instances of course-taking in the sample. The tentative new taxonomy and decision rules were reviewed by faculties in the appropriate fields prior to final application. Data from the study are presented in tabular form and include the following: percentage of students completing undergraduate courses in 1,037 course categories; percentage of students completing undergraduate courses in 103 aggregate course categories; and distribution of all completed courses by type of institution. Additional data presented cover: basic demography and high school backgrounds of students; highest degree earned; college scholarship support; basic demography of 2/4-year and transfer attendance patterns; date of bachelor's degrees; date of associate's degrees; course of study and degrees earned beyond the bachelor's; and college experiences/attainments. Procedures are described that were used to collect and process postsecondary school transcripts for a subsample of members of the younger (i.e. 1980 sophomore) cohort of the High School and Beyond study who attended postsecondary institutions at any time after leaving high school. Five chapters are as follows: (1) introduction (the National Center for Education Statistics Longitudinal Studies Program, relationships between High School and Beyond and the National Longitudinal Study of the High School class of 1972, history of High School and Beyond, related studies, other files, and scope of the Postsecondary Education Transcripts Study); (2) data collection (objectives, mailings, results); (3) data preparation (objectives, data organization, computer-assisted data entry (CADE), and data quality management); (4) data processing (machine editing, organization and content of the data file, merging records, and a cautionary note on the use of credits and grades data in the postsecondary transcripts database); and (5) sample design and implementation (base year sample design, 1980 sophomore cohorts sample design, the Senior and the Sophomore Cohort Postsecondary Education Transcript Study sample, sample weights, and standard errors and design effects). The codebook for the Postsecondary Education Transcript File of the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (NLS-72), which is a machine-readable data file containing information on transcripts from NLS-72 senior cohort members who reported attending a postsecondary institution after high school, is presented. Records were obtained from all types of educational institutions and programs. A total of 19,033 transcripts reflecting the educational activities of 14,759 sample members are included. Information includes: (1) major and minor fields of study; (2) periods of enrollment; (3) courses taken; (4) credits earned; and (5) grades received and credentials earned at 2-year and 4-year institutions. Data are organized at the student, transcript, term, and course levels. This user's manual documents the procedures used to collect this information and provides researchers with the technical information necessary to use the public release data files. Data editing procedures are discussed, and the organization and content of the files are described. Procedures used to construct sampling weights for use in computing population estimates are reviewed. Lists of the endorsing institutions, postsecondary school codes in numerical order, postsecondary school codes in alphabetical order, and course subject codes in numerical order are provided. The data file record layout and frequency distributions are tabulated.
