NCES 2014045REV Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) 2012 U.S. Public Use File (PUF)
The PIAAC U.S. PUF contains individual unit record data including both responses to the background questionnaire and the cognitive assessment from the original U.S. PIAAC data collection completed in 2012. Statistical disclosure control treatments were applied due to confidentiality concerns. For more details on the PUF, please refer to Appendix J of the U.S. PIAAC Technical Report (NCES 2014-047).

Important notes to users:
  1. These original 2012 data have been updated, reweighted, and revised with the release of the PIAAC 2012/2014 dataset (NCES 2016-667). That dataset should be used for analyses instead of this original version unless you are seeking to reproduce historic analyses.
  2. The OECD identified an error in the derivation of the following variables in the PIAAC original 2012 data files: NFE12JR, NFE12NJR, FNFE12JR, FNFAET12JR and FNFAET12NJR. NCES released revised U.S. public-use and restricted-use files, the background compendia, and the codebook on August 18, 2015. The revised public-use files are available below. NCES 2013190 The Adult Education Training and Education Survey (ATES) Pilot Study
This report describes the process and findings of a national pilot test of survey items that were developed to assess the prevalence and key characteristics of occupational certifications and licenses and subbaccalaureate educational certificates. The pilot test was conducted as a computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI) survey, administered from September 2010 to January 2011.

NCES 2013150 Web Tables—Profile of 2007–08 First-Time Bachelor’s Degree Recipients in 2009
These Web Tables use data from the first follow-up of the 2008 Baccalaureate and Beyond (B&B:08/09) study to display a wide range of information on demographic characteristics, educational experiences, and student loan borrowing of 2007–08 first-time bachelor’s degree recipients. In addition to undergraduate experiences, tables display information on employment, community service, postbaccalaureate enrollment, and student loan debt 1 year after bachelor’s degree completion. Results are shown by selected student demographic and enrollment characteristics.

NCES 2012256 Web Tables—Occupational and Academic Majors in Postsecondary Education: 6-Year Education and Employment Outcomes, 2001 and 2009.
These Web Tables compare the 6-year education and labor force outcomes for beginning undergraduates who initially enrolled in postsecondary education in 1995–96 and 2003–04 by whether they majored in an academic or occupational field of study. The data are from two iterations of the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:96/01 and BPS:04/09). The first followed first-time undergraduates who began postsecondary education in 1995–96 until June 2001, and the second followed first-time undergraduates who began postsecondary education in 2003–04 until June 2009. Occupational fields in postsecondary education include a range of majors, including business and marketing and health sciences, and account for a majority of undergraduate postsecondary students.

NCES 2012245 2008-09 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study: Restricted-Use First Follow-up Data Files and File Documentation
The Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B) examines students’ education and work experiences after they complete a bachelor’s degree, with a special emphasis on the experiences of new elementary and secondary teachers. The B&B:08/09 cohort also includes an oversample of STEM graduates.

This DVD-ROM contains the restricted-use base-year interview, first follow-up interview, and undergraduate transcript data for the 15,000 (approx.) B&B:08/09 sample members.

REL 2012130 Retirement Patterns of California Prekindergarten – Grade 12 Educators
This study examines retirement pat-terns of California educators from 1995/96 to 2009/10. It finds that the percentage of educators over age 60 doubled, educators were more likely to retire when a school district’s local revenue decreased, and the percentage of retired educators returning to work increased.

NCES 2012273 Beginning Subbaccalaureate Students’ Labor Market Experiences: Six Years Later in 2009
These Web Tables use data from the 2004/09 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study to identify and present the demographic and employment characteristics of certificate and associate’s degree completers and noncompleters. Labor market experiences presented include employment status as of spring 2009, unemployment spells since last enrolled, median salary earned as of spring 2009, employer-offered benefits, and job satisfaction.

NCES 2011172 Web Tables—Student Financing of Graduate and First-Professional Education: 2007–08
These Web Tables present a summary of the ways in which graduate and first-professional students attending postsecondary institutions in the United States financed their education during the 2007–08 academic year. Tables include information on grants, loans, assistantships, and other types of aid received from federal, state, and institutional sources; average amounts of aid received by source of aid; and employment during graduate and first-professional enrollment. These are shown by enrollment and demographic characteristics such as graduate level, degree program, attendance status, gender, race/ethnicity, age, and field of study.

NCES 2010338 Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 Base Year to Second Follow-up Public-use Data
These data are a Public-Use version of the ELS:2002/06 Restricted-use Base Year to Second Follow-up data (NCES 2008-346) released previously. These data can be downloaded using a new “EDAT” web application on the NCES website. The application allows users to download the data files they need for research in one of six statistical programming languages and then select the variables they need to perform that research. ELS:2002/06 is a nationally representative longitudinal survey of 16,200 high school sophomores in 2002, who were interviewed again in 2004 when most were seniors, and again in 2006 when many were sophomores in college or in the workforce. Data are included on the academic and other aspects of the environment of the schools in which these students were enrolled, as well as peer and parental influences. At the college level, data on the extent of college search, expectations, and choice processes prior to college enrollment, as well as information about subsequent pathways into and out of various types of postsecondary institutions are included. The initial entry of these youth into adulthood is then traced with respect to employment, living patterns, family formation, volunteerism, and military service. The last data collection in the survey will be in 2012, when most of the sample members who went to college will have left college and entered the workforce.

NCES 201002 2008/09 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:08/09) Field Test Methodology Report - Working Paper Series
This report describes the methodology and findings for the field test of the 2008/2009 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:08/09). These students, who completed their bachelor’s degree requirements during the 2007-08 academic year, were first interviewed as part of the 2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:08) field test. BPS:08/09 is the first follow-up of this cohort. The B&B:08/09 field test was used to plan, implement, and evaluate methodological procedures, instruments, and systems proposed for use in the full-scale study scheduled for the year following graduation from a bachelor’s degree program. The report provides the sampling design and methodologies used in the field test. It also describes data collection outcomes, including response rates, interview burden, and results of incentive, mailing, and prompting experiments. In addition, the report provides details on the evaluation of data quality for reliability of responses, item nonresponse, and question delivery and data entry error. Recommendations for the full-scale study are provided for the sampling design, locating and tracing procedures, interviewer training, data collection, and instrumentation.

NCES 2008308 Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002): A First Look at the Initial Postsecondary Experiences of the High School Sophomore Class of 2002
This First Look report provides selected, nationally representative information about the about the transition of 2002 high school sophomores to college, the selectivity and other characteristics of the institutions in which they enrolled, their choice of major, and other characteristics of their enrollment to illustrate the wealth of data that is available from the from the Second Follow-up of the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002. When the Second Follow-up data were collected, most of the sample members were sophomores in college. By 2006, approximately 2 years after their expected graduation date, 88 percent of spring 2002 sophomores had graduated from high school with a diploma and 4 percent had earned a General Education Development certificate. Sixty percent enrolled “immediately” in college after receiving their diploma (by October if they left high school between January and July, or by the following February if they left high school after July). High school students whose parents’ income exceeded $100,000 per year had the highest rates of attendance at 4-year public and private institutions (44 and 26 percent, respectively), compared to students whose families earned $20,000 per year or less (14 and 7 percent, respectively). Thirteen percent of the spring 2002 high school sophomore class enrolled first in a highly selective 4-year institutions and 19 percent enrolled in a moderately selective 4-year institutions. Spring 2002 sophomores who took calculus in high school had the highest rates of enrollment (52 percent) in highly selective 4-year institutions. Among spring 2002 high school sophomores who had attended a postsecondary institution, 15 percent entered college intending to study business, 17 percent entered college intending to study health, and 15 percent entered college intending to study engineering/computer science/natural sciences/mathematics. An appendix to the report briefly summarizes the statistical design of the Second Follow-up.

NCES 2008346 Education Longitudinal Study of 2002/06: Restricted Use Second Follow-up Data Files, Data File Documentation, and Electronic Codebook System
This ELS:2002/2004 CDROM contains a revised version of the restricted-use base-year to second follow-up data that were previously released. Manuals documenting the sample design of these data, how they were collected, and how they should be used are included. This documentation is public use and can be downloaded directly from the ELS website (http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/els2002 /manuals.asp).

The ELS:2002 longitudinal study is designed to monitor a national sample of young people as they progress from tenth grade through high school and on to postsecondary education and/or the world of work. By the third follow-up in 2012, these young people will be in their mid-twenties.

Users of the original second follow-up restricted-use data (NCES 2008-346) can obtain this revised version (NCES 2008-346r) by requesting it from the IES Data Security Office (IESData.Security@ed.gov). Nearly all of the changes that have been made in the original data are in base year and first follow-up variables and not transcript or second follow-up variables.

However, none of these changes affect data that were originally released in the base year to first follow-up restricted-use data (NCES 2006-430 ), or the transcript restricted-use data (NCES-2006-351).

NCES 2007397 Data Files: NCES Comparable Wage Index
The Comparable Wage Index (CWI) is a measure of the systematic, regional variations in the salaries of college graduates who are not educators. It can be used by researchers to adjust district-level finance data at different levels in order to make better comparisons across geographic areas. The CWI was developed by Dr. Lori L. Taylor at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University. This documentation describes four geographic levels of the CWI, which are presented in four separate files. These files are the school district, labor market, state, and a combined regional and national file. The school district file provides a CWI for each local education agency (LEA) in the NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) database. For each LEA there is a series of indexes for the years 1997 - 2005. The file can be merged with school district finance data, and this merged file can be used to produce finance data adjusted for geographic cost differences. This file also includes four agency typology variables. The additional files allow for similar geographic cost adjustments for larger geographic areas.

NCES 2005150 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study 1993/2003 Data Analysis System (DAS) On-line
The DAS contains data from the 2003 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:1993/2003). This study is the third follow-up of a national sample of students who completed bachelor degrees in academic year 1992-1993 and were first surveyed as part of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. This DAS allows users to conduct analyses on data gathered in this study while on-line via the web.
