NCES 2024482 2019–20 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:20) Data File Documentation
This publication describes the methods and procedures used for the 2019–20 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:20). It also provides information that will be helpful to analysts in accessing and understanding the restricted-use files containing the NPSAS:20 data. NPSAS:20 includes cross-sectional, nationally representative samples of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in postsecondary education in the United States. NPSAS:20 also includes state-representative samples of undergraduate students in some states, as well as in public 2 year and in public 4 year institution sectors within some states. The study covers topics pertaining to student enrollment, with a focus on how individuals and families finance postsecondary education.

NPSAS covers topics pertaining to student enrollment, with a focus on how individuals and families finance postsecondary education. NCES 2024303 Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary School Districts: FY 21

This publication includes tables with data on public elementary and secondary education revenues and expenditures at the local education agency (LEA) or school district level for fiscal year (FY) 2021. Specifically, the tables include finance data on the following topics:

  • Current expenditure totals and current expenditure per pupil amounts by state as well as for the 100 largest LEAs;
  • Federal, state, and local revenues for the 100 largest LEAs;
  • Median revenues per pupil and median current expenditures per pupil by geographic region and locale;
  • Current expenditure totals and current expenditure per pupil amounts by activity (e.g., instruction, support services) and specific expenditure (e.g., salaries and wages, employee benefits), by state and for the two largest LEAs in each state;
  • Federal revenues received by LEAs, by program and state;
  • Local revenues by source, by state; and
  • Capital outlay expenditures by state.

This set of provisional web tables include fully edited and imputed data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) fall 2022 collection, which included three survey components: Institutional Characteristics for the 2022-23 academic year, Completions covering the period July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022, and data on 12-Month Enrollment for the 2021-22 academic year.

NCES 2023092 Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2022
A joint effort by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Justice Statistics, this annual report examines crime occurring in schools and colleges. This report presents data on crime at school from the perspectives of students, teachers, principals, and the general population from an array of sources—the National Crime Victimization Survey, the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey, the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, the School Survey on Crime and Safety, the National Teacher and Principal Survey, EDFacts, and the Campus Safety and Security Survey. The report covers topics such as victimization, bullying, school conditions, fights, weapons, the presence of security staff at school, availability and student use of drugs and alcohol, student perceptions of personal safety at school, and criminal incidents at postsecondary institutions.

NFES 2023050 Forum Guide to Discipline Data
The Forum Guide to Discipline Data is designed to help education agencies collect, manage, report, and use discipline data. The guide discusses the importance of discipline data and how these data have changed over time, provides key considerations for data management and staff training, and identifies data reporting and use best practices. It is intended for education agency staff involved in collecting and using discipline data to improve student outcomes; promote positive, productive, and safe learning environments; and ensure equity in education. This audience includes staff responsible for reporting accurate and timely data to the federal government.

NCES 2023122 2022-23 Common Core of Data (CCD) Preliminary Directory Files
On August 31st, the National Center for Education Statistics released the 2022-23 Common Core of Data (CCD) Preliminary Directory Files. These files are the product of the CCD data collection for the 2022-23 school year. Data are reported at district and school levels as of October 1, 2022. The preliminary directory files include basic identifying information for each public school and local education agency (LEA), including the NCES identification numbers, location and mailing address and some limited attributes about the school or LEA, such as type, operational status, the lowest and highest grades offered, and whether a school is a charter school. This release is meant to provide data users with a more timely release of basic information for school and LEA.

NCES 2023014 MGLS 2017 Assessment Item Level Files (ILF)
The Middle Grades Longitudinal Study of 2017-18 (MGLS:2017) measured student achievement in mathematics and reading along with executive function. The MGLS:2017 ILF contains the item level data from these direct measures that can be used in psychometric research for replicating or enhancing the scoring found in the MGLS:2017 RUF or in creating new scores. The Middle Grades Longitudinal Study of 2017–18 (MGLS:2017) Assessment Item Level File (ILF) contains two .csv files representing the two rounds of data collection: the MGLS:2017 Main Study (MS) Base Year (MS1) and the Main Study Follow-up (MS2) files.

This manual provides guidance and documentation for users of the Middle Grades Longitudinal Study of 2017–18 (MGLS:2017) restricted-use school and student data files (NCES 2023-131). An overview of MGLS:2017 is followed by chapters on the study data collection instruments and methods; direct and indirect student assessment data; sample design and weights; response rates; data preparation; data file content, including the composite variables; and the structure of the data file. Appendices include a psychometric report, a guide to scales, field test reports, and school and student file variable listings.

NCES 2023131 MGLS:2017 Restricted Access Use Data Files (RUF)
MGLS data offers information on the characteristics and cognitive outcomes of students who were enrolled in the 6th grade in public schools in the 2017-2018 school year and two years later in spring of 2020 when most students were in the 8th grade. The MGLS data are organized into student and school folders, each containing .txt data, data input files for SAS, SPSS, Stata and R survey software packages. A .csv version of the data is also provided.
