NCES 2021022 Program for the International Student Assessment Young Adult Follow-up Study (PISA YAFS) 2016 Public Use File (PUF)

The PISA YAFS 2016 Public Use File (PUF) consists of data from the PISA YAFS 2016 sample. PISA YAFS was conducted in the United States in 2016 with a sample of young adults (at age 19) who participated in PISA 2012 when they were in high school (at age 15). In PISA YAFS, students took the Education and Skills Online (ESO) literacy and numeracy assessments, which are based on the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). It contains data for individuals including responses to the background questionnaire and the cognitive assessment. Statistical confidentiality treatments were applied due to confidentiality concerns.

For more details on the data, please refer to chapter 8 of the PISA YAFS 2016 Technical Report and User Guide (NCES 2021-020).

NCES 2021047 Program for the International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 Restricted-Use Files (RUF)

The PISA 2018 Restricted Use File (RUF) consists of restricted-use data from PISA 2018 for the United States. The data file and documentation includes the data file, a codebook, instructions on how to merge with the U.S. PISA 2018 public-use dataset (NCES 2021-047), and a cross-walk to assist in merging with other public datasets, such as the Common Core of Data (CCD) and Private School Survey (PSS). As these data files can be used to identify respondent schools, a restricted-use license must be obtained before access to the data is granted. Click on the restricted-use license link below for more details https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pisa/datafiles.asp.

For more details on the data, please refer to chapter 9 of the PISA 2018 Technical Report and User Guide (NCES 2021-011).

NCES 2021122REV 2020-21 Common Core of Data (CCD) Preliminary Files

These files are the product of the CCD data collection for the 2020-21 school year. Data are reported at school and local education agency (LEA) levels as of October 1, 2020. The first preliminary files were released on April 2, 2021, and only contained school and LEA directory files (version 0a). Those data files were reviewed to verify that the data were within expected ranges, but did not undergo the full data quality follow-up process.

The revised SY 2020-21 CCD Preliminary Files include updated directory files (version 0b) as well as the preliminary membership files (version 0a).

  • School Level
    • Preliminary Directory (version 0b)
  • LEA Level
    • Preliminary Directory (version 0b)
    • Preliminary Membership (version 0a)
  • State Level
    • Preliminary Membership (version 0a)

The preliminary school- and LEA-level Directory data (version 0b) in this release reflects updates made on the version 0a during the data quality follow-up period. These 0b files replace the 0a files released in April 2021. The preliminary school and LEA directory files include basic identifying information for each public school and LEA, including the NCES identification numbers, location and mailing address and some limited attributes about the school or LEA, such as type, operational status, the lowest and highest grade offered, and whether a school is a charter school. However, the preliminary directory does not include information regarding the mode of instructional delivery (e.g., in person, virtual) being used at the school for the 2020-21 school year.

The preliminary LEA membership file includes the total student count for each entity, while the preliminary state membership includes student counts by grade, race/ethnicity, and sex. While the preliminary membership files have been reviewed to verify that the counts are within expected ranges, the data in this release has not yet undergone the full data quality follow-up process and may contain errors that have not yet been resolved. They are meant to provide data users with a timely release of basic membership data at the LEA and state levels. Illinois was not able to submit membership data as of the submission deadline. Due to the preliminary nature of the data, users should analyze the data with caution.

NCES 2021178 2012 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:12) Student Records Collection research datafile
The 2012 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:12) Student Records Collection research datafile is a release of exploratory administrative data that are made available only for research on institution response and imputation methodologies. As a result of low institutional response rates, population estimates are NOT advised. Specifically, these data should NOT be used to generate population estimates or analyze the postsecondary records of this BPS cohort. This release includes student-level data for a nationally representative sample of over 35,000 first-time beginning postsecondary students who began postsecondary education during the 2011-12 academic year. Efforts, albeit unsuccessful, were made to collect student level data on enrollment, student budget, and financial aid from postsecondary education institutions attended between the 2011–12 and 2016–17 academic years.

NCES 2021305 Highlights of School-Level Finance Data: Selected Findings from the School-Level Finance Survey (SLFS) School Years 2015-16 (FY 16) and 2016-17 (FY 17)

This statistical analysis report presents key findings and other data highlights from School-Level Finance Survey (SLFS) in school years 2015-16 and 2016-17. The report focuses on (1) the completeness and comparability of SLFS data and (2) how the SLFS can be utilized to evaluate differences in resource allocation (as measured by school-level expenditures) across schools, school districts, and states.

In discussing the findings, the report presents district- and state-aggregated information on school-level expenditure data collected through the SLFS, including:

  • universe coverage and survey item response rates, by state;
  • comparison of SLFS finance data with comparable state-level finance data collected through the National Public Education Financial Survey (NPEFS); and
  • statistics on a wide variety of school-level expenditures (and school-level expenditures per pupil), by school characteristics such as urbanicity and school poverty indicators such as Title I eligibility.

The report also includes an assortment of tables and figures to support its key findings on school-level expenditures collected through the SLFS.
