28 States Win Grants For Longitudinal Data Systems

We are pleased to announce the following 28 new Statewide Longitudinal Data System (SLDS) Grant Program grantees awarded under the FY19 competition:

Alabama, Colorado, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, Connecticut, Guam, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

The IES panel reviewed 44 applications for the grant round, 28 of which have now been awarded. These 28 include all three priority areas, and use nearly all of $105 million expected over 4 years to support the full costs of the grants. Approximately $26 million (FY19 funds) was obligated for Year 1 of the grants. Continuation grants will be awarded in subsequent years. The average FY 2019 award amount is $3.3 million.

The grants awarded will assist states' use of data in statewide, longitudinal data systems (SLDS) to inform their efforts to improve education in critical areas. Applicants were able to apply for funds to carry out projects to address one of three priorities: 1) Infrastructure; 2) Education Choice; and 3) Equity. Using data from the US Census Bureau and student address information, states were also asked to indicate whether they would assist the Department in testing a proposed school-level poverty measure.

The project period for grants under this competition is no more than four years. This time period was determined based on the scope of activity and requirements stipulated in the Request for Applications.

FY19 SLDS Grant Competition and Request for Applications (RFA)

In June 2019, The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) invited State education agencies (SEAs) to apply for federal grants to assist them in using Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems to inform their efforts to improve education in critical areas. Information about this grant competition is available at https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/06/19/2019-13038/applications-for-new-awards-statewide-longitudinal-data-systems. The RFA is also available on the IES website, IES Funding Opportunities. The SLDS team held webinars in July and August 2019 to answer questions about the grant competition, and also posted a frequently asked questions (FAQs) list to provide information in response to questions that are asked about the grant round.

Please find more information about FY19 grantees by selecting the state or territory on the map by visiting the Grantee States tab, or searching the IES Grants Database.
