American Community Survey – Education Tabulation (ACS-ED)
The American Community Survey (ACS) is an annual, nationwide survey which is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and designed to provide communities with reliable and timely demographic, social, economic, and housing data. In collaboration with the Census Bureau, NCES’ EDGE program creates custom tabulations from the ACS, known as the ACS – Education Tabulation (ACS-ED). The ACS-ED data describe the conditions and characteristics of school-age children and their families in the United States at the national, state, and school district levels. These custom NCES files are updated annually and are based on ACS five-year period estimates. Additional information about issues impacting the American Community Survey, including design, collection, production, and data release are available from the ACS technical documentation. In addition to providing ACS-ED tables, EDGE also publishes ACS-ED Maps, an interactive webtool which allows users to visualize the conditions and characteristics of school-age children and families in their geospatial context.
ACS-ED MapsTotal Population
The ACS-ED Total Population Tabulation presented by NCES includes national, state, and school district-level estimates for all people living in households or group quarters. ACS estimates for additional geographic areas are available from the U.S. Census Bureau. Learn more
Children
The ACS-ED Children's Tabulation provides characteristics of school-age children with separate iterations based on enrollment and school type. Iterations include: Total Children; Grade-relevant Children; Grade-relevant Children - Enrolled; and Grade-relevant Children - Enrolled Public. Learn more
Parents
The ACS-ED Parents' Tabulation provides characteristics of the parents of school-age children with separate iterations based on enrollment and school type. The tabulation includes iterations for parents of: Total Children; Grade-relevant Children; Grade-relevant Children - Enrolled; and Grade-relevant Children - Enrolled Public. Learn more
Supplemental Tables
ACS Detailed Tables provide cross-tabulations of multiple characteristics. The tables contain tens of thousands of estimates and margins of error in more than one thousand tables. This data collection includes the primary characteristics provided in the standard ACS Profile Tables as well as other characteristics about additional conditions. The Detailed Tables do not include percentages for most data items.
Note: Beginning in 2008-2012, the Children and Parent Detailed Tables were replaced with Profile Tables.
