!Interpret data with caution. The coefficient of variation (CV) for this estimate is between 30 and 50 percent.
‡Reporting standards not met. Either there are too few cases for a reliable estimate or the coefficient of variation (CV) is 50 percent or greater.
1In the total for students bullied during school, students who reported more than one type of bullying were counted only once. In 2022, the definition of being bullied was expanded to include having private information, photos, or videos shared on purpose in a harmful way. Due to this change, caution should be used when comparing 2022 estimates for "Total bullied during school" to those from earlier years.
2In 2005, the period covered by the survey question was "during the last 6 months," but this was changed to "during this school year" beginning in 2007. Cognitive testing suggested that modifications to the reference period would not have a substantial impact on the survey responses.
3The 2015 survey included a split sample design to compare two versions of an updated questionnaire on bullying that would provide data on repetition and power imbalance aligned with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s uniform definition of bullying. Half the sample received version 1, and the other half received version 2. Estimates in this table are based on the 50 percent of the sample who received version 1 of the questionnaire. For more information, see Split-Half Administration of the 2015 School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey Methodology Report (NCES 2017-004) (https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2017/2017004.pdf).
4The 2019 survey included a split sample design to compare two versions of an updated questionnaire on bullying. Approximately 60 percent of the sample received version 1, which was consistent with prior years; the remaining 40 percent received version 2, which included changes such as removing the word "bullying." Estimates in this table are based on the 60 percent of the sample who received version 1 of the questionnaire. For more information, see Split-Sample Administration of the 2019 School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCES 2022-033) (https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2022/2022033.pdf).
5Excludes students with missing information about the school characteristic.
NOTE: Excludes students who received any homeschooling education during the school year. In 2022, also excludes students who only attended virtual public or private schools. In 2019 and earlier years, students were asked to report their experiences "at school," which includes in the school building, on school property, on a school bus, and going to and from school. In 2022, students were asked about things that happen "during school," which includes in the school building, on school property, on a school bus, going to and from school, and using the phone, internet, or social media. Due to this change, caution should be used when comparing 2022 estimates to those from earlier years. Race categories exclude persons of Hispanic ethnicity.
