!Interpret data with caution. The coefficient of variation (CV) for this estimate is between 30 and 50 percent.
1In previous versions of the table, "violent excluding simple assault" was labeled as "serious violent" victimization.
2"At school" includes in the school building, on school property, on a school bus, and going to or from school.
3Due to methodological changes implemented in 2006, use caution when comparing 2006 estimates to other years.
4Due to the methodology used to create the 2016 revised National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) data, victimization estimates among youth in 2016 were not comparable to estimates for other years.
5In 2020, 2021, and 2022, students may have spent less time at school than in previous years due to their school's modified procedures to mitigate the risks associated with the coronavirus pandemic.
NOTE: "All violent" victimization includes the crimes of rape, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. "Theft" includes attempted and completed purse-snatching, completed pickpocketing, and all attempted and completed thefts, with the exception of motor vehicle thefts. Theft does not include robbery, which involves the threat or use of force and is classified as a violent crime. "Total victimization" includes theft and violent crimes. Data in this table are from the NCVS and are reported in accordance with Bureau of Justice Statistics statistical standards. Due to differences in time coverage and administration between the NCVS and the School Crime Supplement (SCS) to the NCVS, data in this table cannot be compared with data in tables that are based on the SCS. Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding. The population size for students ages 12-18 was 26,128,300 in 2022.
