!Interpret data with caution. The coefficient of variation (CV) for this estimate is between 30 and 50 percent.
Includes homeschooled children.
Respondents who wrote in some other race that was not included as an option on the questionnaire.
Highest education level of any related adult residing with the child. Related adults include adults who are related to the child and the householder or are themselves the householder. Excludes adults who are related to the child but not to the householder. Also includes related householders who are under age 18.
Includes related adults who completed high school through equivalency programs, such as a GED program.
Includes related adults with doctorate degrees or professional degrees beyond bachelor's degrees.
Children living with a related householder include all children who live in a household and are related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption (except a child who is the spouse of the householder). The householder is the person (or one of the people) who owns or rents (maintains) the housing unit.
Includes only children who resided with at least one of their parents (including an adoptive or stepparent) or with a related householder. Estimates for parents' employment status do not include children with at least one parent younger than 16 years old, because the American Community Survey only asks employment questions for those 16 and older.
Children living with only one related adult who was employed are included in both the "all related adults employed" data and the "at least one related adult employed" data.
Mother includes a biological, adoptive, or stepmother and excludes a foster mother. In two-mother households, children are categorized as having their mother employed if at least one mother is employed. Children living with foster mothers are included in the "Not applicable (no mother in household)" category.
Includes only children who are related to the householder. Children are considered to be in poverty if their family income falls below the Census Bureau's poverty threshold, which is a dollar amount that varies depending on a family's size and composition and is updated annually to account for inflation. For example, the poverty threshold for a family of four with two children was $29,678 in 2022. Respondents were interviewed throughout the year and reported on the income they received during the previous 12 months. Poverty status cannot be determined for unrelated children (e.g., foster children) because their family income is not known.
NOTE: Data are based on sample surveys of the entire population residing within the United States, including those living in group quarters (e.g., shelters, healthcare facilities, or correctional facilities). Data for 2020 are not presented in this table due to collection issues associated with the coronavirus pandemic. Race categories exclude persons of Hispanic ethnicity. Some data have been revised from previously published figures.
