‡Reporting standards not met. Either there are too few cases for a reliable estimate or the coefficient of variation (CV) is 50 percent or greater.
1Includes other illegal drug use not shown separately--specifically, the use of heroin, hallucinogens, and inhalants, as well as the nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives.
2Includes hashish.
3Includes all the different forms of cocaine, such as powder, "crack," free base, and coca paste.
4In 2010, the portion of the questionnaire on misuse of pain relievers said the following: "We are not interested in your use of over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin, Tylenol, or Advil that can be bought in drug stores or grocery stores without a doctor's prescription. Card A shows pictures of some different types of prescription pain relievers and lists the names of some others. These pictures show only pills, but we are interested in your use of any form of prescription pain relievers that were not prescribed for you or that you took only for the experience or feeling they caused." In 2020, respondents were provided with examples of misuse, including the following: "(1) use without a prescription of the respondent’s own; (2) use in greater amounts, more often, or longer than told to take a drug; or (3) use in any other way a doctor did not direct the respondent to use a drug."
NOTE: Race categories exclude persons of Hispanic ethnicity.
