Relative levels of research activity for research universities were determined by an analysis of research and development expenditures, science and engineering research staffing, and doctor's degrees conferred, by field. Further information on the research activity index may be obtained from https://carnegieclassifications.acenet.edu/. This table excludes 122 institutions with missing data on Carnegie classifications, with 38,778 students enrolled. Degree-granting institutions grant associate’s or higher degrees and participate in Title IV federal financial aid programs. Race categories exclude persons of Hispanic ethnicity.
