NOTE: Data in this table represent the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Prior to 2010, disaggregated data on students who were Asian, Pacific Islander, and of Two or more races were not collected. Data for students who were Asian included students who were Pacific Islander, and students of Two or more races were required to select a single category from among the offered race/ethnicity categories (i.e., White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and American Indian/Alaska Native). Projections for Asian enrollment and Pacific Islander enrollment are not available separately due to the limited amount of historical data available upon which to base a projection model. Data through 1995 are for institutions of higher education, while later data are for degree-granting institutions. Degree-granting institutions grant associate's or higher degrees and participate in Title IV federal financial aid programs. The degree-granting classification is very similar to the earlier higher education classification, but it includes more 2-year colleges and excludes a few higher education institutions that did not grant degrees. Projections in this table were calculated after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and take into account the expected impacts of the pandemic. Race categories exclude persons of Hispanic ethnicity. Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding. Some data have been revised from previously published figures.
