Because of survey improvements in 2002, the 2002 data constitute a new baseline for tracking trends. In addition, the questionnaire underwent a partial redesign in 2015, and new baselines were started for estimates that were affected by the questionnaire changes. Valid trend comparisons can be made from 1985 through 1995, from 1999 through 2001, and--for most estimates in this table--from 2002 through 2019. For estimates of any illicit drug use (columns 2 and 7), the 2015 data constitute a new baseline for tracking trends; comparisons can be made from 2015 to 2019. 2020 and 2021 estimates should not be compared to those of prior years due to the impact that the coronavirus pandemic had on data collection.
