Appendix A.5. GED Testing Service

GED Testing Service is a joint venture, begun in 2011, between the American Council on Education (ACE) and Pearson. A GED credential documents high school-level academic skills. The test was first administered to World War II veterans in 1942 and was subsequently administered to civilians beginning in 1947. The first four generations of the GED test were the original GED test released in 1942, the 1978 series, the 1988 series, and the 2002 series. The current GED test was introduced in 2014 and revised in 2016. A comparison of the current GED test and the 2002 series test is available at https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED578900.pdf. It is important to note that attempting to make comparisons in GED testing across jurisdictions is problematic, since each jurisdiction manages its own GED testing program. Thus, each jurisdiction develops its own policies, and these policies are reflected in a jurisdiction's testing program outcomes (its pass rates, for instance).
