3 California implemented a major reorganization of its school and school district directory structure for school year 2018-19, reclassifying approximately 900 charter schools as direct-funded charter schools and separating them into new school districts. As a result of this reorganization, there was a large increase between 2017-18 and 2018-19 in the number of independent charter districts in California.
