A confidence interval is a range of values that describes the uncertainty surrounding an estimate. Throughout the Condition of Education, confidence intervals are calculated as the estimate +/- the margin of error, based on a 95 percent level of confidence. This means that there is 95 percent certainty that the range includes the true or actual value of the statistic.

NOTE: To estimate the margin of error, the standard error is scaled based on the desired level of confidence in the estimate. Throughout the Condition of Education, margins of error are produced based on a 95 percent level of confidence. Margin of error is calculated as 1.96*standard error. Data are based on sample surveys of the entire population residing within the United States (defined as the 50 states and the District of Columbia), including those living in group quarters (e.g., shelters, healthcare facilities, or correctional facilities). Data for 2020 are not presented in this figure due to collection issues associated with the coronavirus pandemic. While the 2020 ACS data are not available, data were collected throughout the 12 months of 2021. In addition, the school enrollment question asked about enrollment during the previous 3 months in 2021 ACS. Thus, respondents to the 2021 ACS could be reporting on school enrollment from late 2020 to fall 2021, throughout much of the 2020–21 school year.
