The NAEP 2012 sample design consisted of two assessments: economics and long-term trend (LTT).

Both assessments included separate sample components for public and private schools and both were based on a three-stage sample design:

selection of primary sampling units (PSUs);
selection of schools within strata, and
selection of students within schools.

Weights were developed to reflect these three stages of selection and to adjust for school and student nonresponse. Replication-based variance methods were used to reflect the complex sample design.
