NAEP Technical DocumentationStudent Booklets for the 2013 Reading Assessment

In 2013, the NAEP reading assessment was administered at grades 4, 8 and 12. Of the 28 comprehension blocks administered across the three grades, 20 were carried over from the 2009 and 2011 assessments, and 8 blocks were new. A total of five distinct blocks were released after the NAEP 2013 reading assessment and are available to the public via the NAEP Questions Tool. Released blocks of questions are not administered in subsequent NAEP assessments.

The tables below display the NAEP 2013 reading assessment student booklet configurations for grades 4, 8, and 12.

NOTE: There were 60 booklets in the bookmap for the grade 4 Reading assessment. There were 50 booklets with two comprehension blocks, and 10 books comprised of one comprehension block and one vocabulary block. Each vocabulary block is comprised of two 12.5 minute vocabulary half blocks. (Note: the 10 vocabulary blocks are made up of various combinations of four different 12.5 minute vocabulary half blocks. There are A and B versions of the vocabulary blocks because of position placement within the block and directions for continuing within the A versions). Each comprehension block appears six times in position 1 and five times in position 2. Each comprehension block appears with all other comprehension blocks at least once but not with each other block in both positions 1 and 2. Each of the vocabulary half blocks is paired (a) with each of the other half blocks at least once and (b) with 5 of the 10 comprehension blocks. B123GD — General (booklet) directions appear on the inside front cover and are common across subjects for all booklets. E123CDR-25 — Cognitive directions are common across all Reading booklets. Y1BD — Background questionnaire directions for grade 4 Reading booklets. J1D1 — Core background questionnaire block for grade 4 Reading booklets. J1RB1 — Reading background questionnaire block for grade 4 Reading booklets. All Grade 4 Reading blocks are 25 minutes, whether comprised of comprehension-only blocks or comprehension/vocab blocks.
