For the 2009 assessment, instrument developers created nine new cognitive blocks at grade 4, ten new cognitive blocks at grade 8, and 11 new cognitive blocks at grade 12. In addition to the traditional cognitive blocks, two hands-on tasks (HOT) and three (two short and one extended) interactive computer tasks (ICT) were developed for each of grades 4, 8, and 12. Two cognitive blocks at each grade were released from the NAEP 2009 science assessment and are available to the public via the NAEP Questions Tool. Released blocks of questions are not used in later assessments.
