For the 2005 assessment, instrument developers chose seven blocks at grade 4 and ten blocks at grade 8 from the 2003 reading assessment, as well as nine blocks from the 2002 reading assessment for blocks at grade 12. (The grade 12 blocks were chosen from the 2002 assessment, because the 2003 assessment sampled students only at grades 4 and 8.) In addition, they created three new blocks at each of grades 4 and 8, as well as two new blocks at grade 12. Three blocks at grade 4, four blocks at grade 8, and blocks at grade 12 from the NAEP 2003 reading assessment were released and are available to the public via the NAEP Questions Tool .
